Pipe elbows turn a line through a defined angle while maintaining a compatible bore and wall. Selection is not limited to 45° versus 90°. Long-radius and short-radius patterns have different centerline radii and installation envelopes; reducing elbows combine direction and size change; threaded, socket-weld, butt-weld, flanged and grooved ends require different mating systems.
Materials and dimensional references
Factory-made wrought butt-welding elbows are commonly specified to ASME B16.9, with short-radius elbows and returns addressed by ASME B16.28. Forged socket-weld or threaded elbows fall under ASME B16.11. Material may be ASTM A234 WPB or alloy grades, ASTM A403 stainless grades, ASTM A420 low-temperature grades, or another line-class material. State both the material specification and dimensional standard.
Selection, orientation and FAQ
Check angle, radius, nominal size, schedule at each end, tangent length, end preparation, corrosion allowance and allowable thinning or ovality. Consider velocity, erosion, solids, noise, cleanability and pig passage. During installation, mark the elbow plane and flow direction, support adjoining pipe, align bevels without forcing and verify the spool against its isometric. A rotated elbow can create an unintended compound offset.
Is long radius always better? It gives a gentler turn but needs more space. Can an elbow be cut to another angle? Only under an engineered fabrication procedure. What causes early wear? High velocity, solids, two-phase flow and poor orientation can concentrate erosion at the outer radius.

Material route
Malleable iron, ductile iron, gray iron, carbon steel and stainless steel are common specification routes. The selected grade must suit the manufacturing process, wall geometry, joining method and medium; a material family alone does not establish service suitability.
Mechanical performance
Use the tensile strength, yield or proof strength, elongation, hardness, impact and heat-treatment requirements published for the selected material grade. Relevant properties differ by product form and test-piece basis. They describe material quality, not the capacity of the finished Elbows; final suitability depends on geometry, interfaces, manufacturing condition and verification.
Finish and records
Specify plain, zinc-coated, hot-dip galvanized, painted, passivated or another compatible finish by a recognized coating specification where applicable. Define preparation, appearance, restricted substances, repair rules, packaging and required inspection documents instead of relying on a color photograph.
