Custom pipe fittings are appropriate when a standard elbow, tee, reducer or branch outlet cannot satisfy the required envelope, end preparation, wall transition or material grade. The purchasing package should distinguish a dimensionally modified standard fitting from a fully engineered special. That decision affects calculations, forming limits, weld qualification, heat treatment, examination and proof requirements.
Material route and code basis
Common starting materials include ASTM A234 wrought carbon and alloy steel, ASTM A403 wrought stainless steel, ASTM A420 low-temperature steel and high-strength pipeline grades addressed by MSS SP-75. ASME B16.9 covers factory-made wrought butt-welding fittings within its scope; ASME B16.11 addresses forged socket-welding and threaded fittings. A nonstandard geometry may require design substantiation under the governing B31 piping code rather than a simple claim of B16.9 compliance.
RFQ, installation and FAQ
Provide line class, design conditions, corrosion allowance, all end sizes and schedules, center-to-end dimensions, branch angle, tangents, bevels, flow direction, grade, heat treatment, NDE and documents. Identify critical internal contour, ovality, minimum wall, weld location or piggability. At installation, confirm orientation and schedule before fit-up, use qualified welding procedures and complete specified examination.
Can any drawing be made? Manufacturability and code compliance need review. Can fabricated replace wrought? Only with accepted design, weld and inspection controls. Should a generic test pressure be listed? No; use the approved system test procedure.

Relevant properties differ by product form and test-piece basis.
