Flanges create a removable pipe joint, nozzle connection or blind closure. Weld-neck, slip-on, socket-weld, threaded, lap-joint and blind patterns distribute loads differently and have distinct fabrication requirements. Facing type, class and drilling must match the mating flange; nominal size alone is not enough.
Standards and materials
ASME B16.5 covers pipe flanges and flanged fittings through its stated size range and includes ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking, testing, bolting, gaskets and joints. Larger steel flanges may use ASME B16.47, while gray-iron products use ASME B16.1. Common forged materials include ASTM A105 carbon steel, ASTM A350 low-temperature steel and ASTM A182 alloy or stainless grades. Confirm material group against class and temperature.
Selection, assembly and FAQ
Specify type, NPS, class, facing, bore or matching schedule, material, corrosion allowance and finish. Select gasket and bolting as part of the same joint. Inspect faces, serrations, bolt holes and gasket condition. Bring aligned flanges together without using bolts as jacks, center the gasket, lubricate only as approved and tighten in controlled cross-pattern passes.
Can raised-face and flat-face flanges be mixed? Only when design permits. Can a gasket be reused? Normally no unless expressly allowed. Does a higher class always fit? No; drilling, facing, thickness and rating must be checked.

Material names, standards and coating descriptions below help buyers structure an RFQ; they are not a declaration that every offered configuration complies. Material route
Malleable iron, ductile iron, gray iron, carbon steel and stainless steel are common specification routes. The selected grade must suit the manufacturing process, wall geometry, joining method and medium; a material family alone does not establish service suitability.
Mechanical performance
Use the tensile strength, yield or proof strength, elongation, hardness, impact and heat-treatment requirements published for the selected material grade. Relevant properties differ by product form and test-piece basis. They describe material quality, not the capacity of the finished Flanges; final suitability depends on geometry, interfaces, manufacturing condition and verification.
Finish and records
Specify plain, zinc-coated, hot-dip galvanized, painted, passivated or another compatible finish by a recognized coating specification where applicable. Define preparation, appearance, restricted substances, repair rules, packaging and required inspection documents instead of relying on a color photograph.
