Treat the connection as an assembly
Atkore describes Unistrut as a support system comprising channels, fittings, fasteners, hangers and clamps, with a channel-nut connection. This supports an assembly-based review; it does not establish compatibility between every component sold under a generic strut description. Manufacturer system overview.
| Interface | Record for the proposed assembly | Avoid this shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| Channel to nut | Channel series/section and specified nut reference | Assuming all spring nuts fit all channel depths |
| Nut to bolt | Thread designation, bolt reference and required engagement detail | Checking diameter without the thread or assembly detail |
| Fitting to channel | Hole pattern, plate geometry, orientation and mating faces | Selecting from a front-view photograph only |
| Connection to load data | The exact documented configuration and loading direction | Applying a rating for a different arrangement |
| Finish to assembly | Specified coating and fit after finishing | Treating finish as a colour choice |
Make substitutions visible
When asking for an alternative, include the original system reference and an annotated drawing. Ask the supplier to return a comparison with “same,” “different” or “not confirmed” for each interface. Dimensional matching and engineering acceptance are separate review steps.
A mixed assembly should have a clearly identified reviewer and acceptance basis. The checklist does not assign a working load or approve cross-brand substitutions. Product-specific tightening instructions should remain attached to the selected assembly.
Choose fittings around the connection to be made
Start with the desired joint: a right-angle connection, an in-line connection, a support base or a pipe attachment. Then compare the available fitting groups against the drawing. Show access for assembling the joint and identify all fasteners in the bill of materials.
If the connection also supports piping, use the pipe-support guide to separate the pipe function from the framing connection. If coating changes are proposed, review finish and threaded-fit requirements.
Request a complete fitting package
- Supply the channel identification and assembly drawing, not just a fitting name.
- List quantity by fitting and fastener reference, including what is excluded.
- Identify required dimensional checks and documents for approval.
- Record drawing revision, finish and packaging for repeat orders.
